Mrs. Ford wanted to have a rose garden installed but Jensen originally disapproved of this claiming that it would ruin the landscape which was designed to look completely natural. Jensen had previously quit on Henry Ford and Clara Ford, when Clara wanted to install a rose garden directly in the center of the backyard meadow at the Henry Ford Estate. Many of these paintings were donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts after Eleanor’s death. Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts were a gift of Edsel Ford.
Jensen's son was contracted later on to install the new garden area which has a reflecting pool and does not have the natural stylizing of the rest of the grounds. Instead he opted for finely trimmed bushes and square grassy areas. "By restoring the shoreline to its natural condition, we can support our local wildlife and provide more sustainable care to the estate and its shoreline," he said.
Some areas of the home are appointed in an entirely different style, including the children’s bedrooms which were designed in a markedly modern style by Industrial Designer Walter Teague. When the Fords commissioned Kahn to design their house, they traveled with him to England for inspiration and ideas. They asked him to design a house that would resemble the cottages they saw in the Cotswold countryside.
It reflects their love of family as well as their mutual passion for art and quality design. The estate includes the historic residence and outbuildings, 87 acres of ground and gardens, and a new Visitor Center with exhibits, dining, shopping, and special event spaces. Ford House is open year-round for grounds walks, tours, educational programs, special events, private rentals, dining, shopping, and more. Edsel and Eleanor were drawn to English manor architecture and settled on the Cotswold village aesthetic, often referred to as “Storybook Style” which features steep roof pitches and prominent gables, large chimneys, and limestone masonry exteriors. Interestingly, none of the rooms of the home are appointed in a specific period. Rather than creating historical reproductions; interior elements from many genres intermingle successfully to evoke the comfortable, homey Cotswold aesthetic the Fords were so fond of.
Construction began in 1926 on a house with sandstone exterior walls and a traditional slate roof. For two years post-construction, the house was fitted with fireplaces from English manor houses and antique wood paneling. The home became the family’s residence in 1929, where the Fords’ children, Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William, were raised. The naturalistic grounds of the estate on Lake St. Clair include a power house, a gatehouse with two apartments and an eight car garage, a recreation or pool house, and a completely fitted child’s playhouse.
